Behaviour of dissolvers

From Chemical Spill Response
Jump to: navigation, search

The behaviour of dissolver plumes in the water column is similar to the behaviour of gas/vapour plumes in the air. The currents dictate the movement in the water column; the effect of wind diminishes rapidly with depth. Plume from a subsurface point source in water will also increase in size by dispersion while decreasing in concentration.

Movement

A plume of dissolved substance will move in the direction of the current and with the speed of the current.

Spreading

Besides the movement induced by the current a plume will also grow in size by dispersing into the water and decreasing in concentration to undetectable and non-toxic levels.
