From Chemical Spill Response
Section 2.2.1 represents the primary classification. By determining a compound’s base structure and functional groups, predictions can be made about its chemical behaviour. However, in the shipping and transport industry, differing classifications are in place for quick assessment of hazards for human health and the environment.
- For packaged goods, a label according to the IMDG classification (section 2.4.1) should be visible on outside of the packaging.
- For bulk liquids, the GESAMP hazard profile (section 2.4.2) is in place.
- For stowage of chemicals classification by reactivity is relevant because some chemicals are not compatible with each other, and some are not compatible with water (section 2.4.3)
- For spillage response the physical classification of chemicals (section 2.4.5) is very important in ascertaining the fate, effects and appropriate response.
