From Chemical Spill Response
A ship in distress requires decision making to reduce and limit the damage and prevent further escalation of the situation.
There are different distress situations that a ship could experience. In the following paragraphs, the most common distress situations are listed. In many cases, a distress situation is not one isolated event; the distress situations listed can be an effect of one on another, for instance grounding as a result of a ship being adrift. It is also possible for multiple situations to occur at the same time such as a fire on a grounded ship etc.
