This category consists of all liquid products with specific gravities less than water. It can be divided into four subclasses:

Floater/Evaporator

This subgroup includes floating substances that are subject to evaporation. However, concentrations in air depend on the vapour pressure of the substance and the layer thickness, which for spreading layers is inversely related to the area covered. The possibility of explosion and/or toxic effects has to be evaluated accordingly. Single substance evaporators will eventually disappear completely.

Floater/Evaporator/Dissolver

Floating substances, which evaporate and dissolve slowly or react with water make up this subclass of products. However, concentrations in air or water depend on vapour pressure and solubility/reactivity and on the layer thickness, which is inversely related to the area covered. The possibility of explosive/toxic effects in the air and in the water column has to be evaluated accordingly is likely to increase substantially. Depending on the vapour pressure Single substances of this type will also disappear completely from the water surface after some time.

Floater

The liquids belonging to this group are floating substances, which do not readily dissolve and evaporate. This type of pollutant persists at the water surface for a considerable length of time and is likely to be washed ashore eventually.

Floater/Dissolver (/Dispersers)

The final subclass of floating substances consists of products which dissolve/disperse or reacts slowly with water. The degree and rate of solubility or of droplet dispersion of these substances together with their floating layer thickness, determines the resulting level of toxicity in the water phase. This type of pollutant will also tend to disappear from the water surface in due course.
