In the previous chapters, we have learned about chemicals, how they are transported and what happens if they are introduced to the marine environment. In this chapter we take a look at how these substances are introduced to the marine environment.
In the majority of HNS spills, a distress situation of the ship (such as a fire or collision) eventually leads to spillage of the hazardous goods. In paragraph 3.1 different distress situations are described. Paragraph 3.2.1 lists the ways HNS can be introduced to the environment. In paragraph 3.3 a statistical analysis of historical cases of HNS spills is made.
