Emergency towage
From Chemical Spill Response
Sometimes the only way to reduce the hazards of a ship in distress is to tow it to a save place (sheltered area, safe haven, place of refuge, etc.). In the case of the Stanislaw Dubois the ship was towed to a place to let her sink.

Drifting ships could be a threat to offshore installations such as windmills or oil and gas platforms. An Emergency Towing Vessel (ETV) could prevent collision of a ship with such objects at sea. Casualty towage services, based on a considerable range of tugs of various sizes, are available from tug suppliers.
Some incidents, which may need emergency towing assistance, are:
- Engine breakdown
- Water ingress
- Fuel problems
- Instability
