Methodology
All cases were listed based on the ship name. The information of different sources was combined to complete the dataset as much as possible.
Cases, of which not enough information could be retrieved, were left out of the analysis. Also cases which were considered irrelevant for various reasons were excluded.
The list includes:
- Spills of HNS from ships
- Distress situations of ships containing HNS
- Lost packages containing HNS
Excluded are:
- Spills of crude oils
- Lost packages containing unknown materials
- Spills of inert materials
- Spills of HNS on land or from land based sources (factory, truck)
Deviations between sea-areas that the accident took place will not be relevant in this dataset. Some of the sources of information specifically target a specific area. Any deviation found here will be the result of better documentation rather than concentration of the incidents.
In total, 291 cases were considered relevant. In the following text, analysis of these cases is described. For each of the cases, the following information was provided:
1 ship name
2 ship type
3 incident date
4 Incident location
5 Location classification
6 action before distress
7 cause of distress 8 cause of spill
9 cargo type (bulk/package)
10 cargo
11 Spilled amount
12 Spilled substance (SEBC, top 100 score, category
13 (Potential seriousness)
A Amount involved
B Amount spilled
