Some chemicals are separately named in the USCG compatibility chart because in being transported in large quantities that could react with other substances.

Ammonia

Ammonia has the formula NH3. It is a gas with a distinctive smell.

Figure 41 Ammonia

Ammonia is a strong base, and will react with acids to form so called ammonium salts containing the ammonium ion (NH4+).

Ammonia gas is toxic and can cause lung damage and even death. Humans have a specific mechanism to prevent ammonia build up in the bloodstream. However fish and amphibians lack this mechanism, making ammonia more toxic to aquatic animals even in low concentration.

Household ammonia is a solution of ammonia in water.

Caprolactam

This compound is a cyclic amide of capriotic acid.

Figure 42 Carprolactam

Caprolactam is irritant and mildly toxic.

As the precursor to Nylon 6, it is a widely used synthetic polymer.

Carbon disulphide

Carbon disulphide is a colourless volatile liquid.

Figure 43 Carbon disulphide

This compound is highly flammable and reactive with different substances.

Carbon disulphide is toxic and flammable. Historically carbon disulphide was used as a solvent for the extraction of oils. However because of its flammability and toxicity, other solvents have replaced it in this field.

A current use of carbon disulphide is as a raw material for cellophane.

Vinyl acetate

Vinyl acetate is the vinyl esther of acetic acid.

Figure 44 Vinyl acetate

This compound is reactive with other chemicals, and itself. For transport it should be inhibited and properly packaged to prevent polymerization.

Vinyl acetate is used as a chemical building block for a wide variety of polymers.

Sulfolane

Sulfolane is a cyclic compound containing a sulphur atom with two double bonded oxygen atoms.

Figure 45 Sulfolane

Sulfolane is a stable compound of low reactivity. It is flammable and toxic depending on concentration.

The main use of sulfolane is as an industrial solvent, for purifying natural gas for example.
