The Standard European Behaviour Classification has been discussed in section 2.4.5 as providing a good indication of the compartments to which a released substance may migrate.

The first letter of the SEBC indicates the predominant behaviour of the substance. The subsequent letters indicate lesser behaviours.

For instance; the classification FED that most of the substance will float while significant amounts will evaporate and dissolve/disperse and that impacts need to be evaluated for the air, the water surface and the water column.
