Ship to ship and ship to shore transfer
From Chemical Spill Response
Lightering of a vessel at sea could sometimes be required before the ship is permitted to enter a harbour.

Lightering could also be required to trim a ship in order to prevent further leakage.
Ship to ship transfer could be achieved from the top of the tank, with submersible pumps or using the pumps on board the distressed vessel. This kind of operation requires the use of large fenders and intrinsically safe pumps.
Underwater bunker and liquid cargo removal
Special techniques have been developed to remove the bunkers or cargo from a sunken vessel e.g. hot-tap technology guarantees a spill free removal of any contained fluid either from above or under water.
